Which is the better reselling platform? Poshmark vs. eBay

For those new to reselling, one of the most common questions that I hear is, “What’s the best platform for reselling?” Unfortunately, there is not a one size fits all answer. A lot of it depends on what you are selling and how much time you have to put into your listings. Last week, I compared Poshmark vs. eBay. This week, I thought I’d share about another reselling platform to help you decide. So, this post is going to be all about Poshmark vs. Depop.

What is Poshmark?

Here is how Poshmark describes its platform:

Poshmark connects you to people whose style you adore, allowing you to easily shop closets and boutiques. With over 80 million community members across the U.S., Canada, and Australia and 200 million items for sale, we know you’ll find something you love.

Have items just hanging in your closet? Home decor or new beauty items that you’d like to sell? We know the feeling. List items for sale on Poshmark in less than 60 seconds. Sell what you have in your closet so that you can shop for what you really love today!”

Poshmark Pros

  1. Super Simple to get started: I have found that Poshmark’s user interface is one of the most intuitive and easy to use. There are not as many fields to fill out as eBay and you can create your first listing in just a few minutes from your phone.
  2. Flat Rate Shipping: For folks who get nervous about figuring out shipping, Poshmark is the way to go. There is a flat fee of $7.45 shipping for anything 5lbs and under. You can offer your buyers shipping discounts if you choose when making offers. Poshmark also has a deal with USPS that lets you use any of their Priority Mail boxes or envelopes, which you can get for FREE. Maybe the best part of Poshmark’s shipping model is that you don’t need a scale or really know anything about shipping. For this reason alone, I typically recommend folks that are new to reselling to start with Poshmark.
  3. Social Selling: Poshmark is a very social platform, with the ability to comment back and forth between buyers and sellers. There is also a “stories” feature similar to Instagram to share more about yourself and/or your Posh closet.

Poshmark Cons

  1. Selling Fee: This is probably the biggest complaint that I hear from folks who sell on Poshmark. Poshmark will take 20% of the sales price in fees. If your item sells for under $15, it is a flat fee of $2.95. Therefore, you won’t earn much money on Posh if you are selling low-end items. Depop only charges a 10% platform fee which is HALF of what Poshmark charges. This allows for more money in your pocket with each sale.
  2. Must share items to make sales: This is another big complaint I hear about Poshmark. Because it is a social selling platform, you must share your items so that they show up in the feed and at the top of search listings. Serious sellers will use a VA service to share for them as this can become a very tedious process. For those just getting started, the bulk sharing tool that Poshmark recently introduced is a great option that drastically cuts down on the amount of time needed to share your listings.

Which is the best reselling platform if you are worried about fees? – DEPOP

What is Depop?

Depop describes itself this way:

“Depop is the fashion marketplace app where the next generation come to discover unique items. With a global community buying, selling and connecting to make fashion more inclusive, diverse and less wasteful. This is what transforming fashion looks like.”

Depop Pros

  1. Visually appealing: People who sell on Depop take a lot of pride in their photos. They tend to model their clothes and the sets and backgrounds are colorful. So, it’s fun to scroll and shop. If you are someone comfortable modeling your items, Depop would be a good platform for you to sell on.
  2. Great for vintage and trendy items: I first started selling on Depop to help move my vintage items. What I notice is that the super trendy/youthful brands seem to do very well. So, if you have a lot of vintage and trendy stuff in your inventory, Depop may be a good platform for you.
  3. Immediate Payment: With Depop, buyers must submit their payment immediately via PayPal. Then, you just go in and accept the money. That’s it!

Depop Cons

  1. Only allows 4 photos: This is a source of constant frustration for me. Depop only allows you to post 4 photos. I do believe they allow for one video as well, so that’s one way to get around the photo limitation. But I hate having videos take up so much storage on my phone. The limit on the photos really makes it difficult to show all the details of your items.
  2. Discounts and offers are clunky: Depop does not have an “offer to likers” feature like Poshmark. Instead, you can go in and mark down certain items by a fixed percentage. This is a good way to put your stuff on sale but I do wish that there was a way to make offers to likers like on Poshmark.

What’s my overall recommendation? It really depends on you and what is important to you. But, for most people, I think Poshmark is by far the easiest platform to get started with. Once you have some comfort level with one platform, try taking on another one.
